Volunteer Organizations
Whether you’re a caregiver or family member looking for help or an individual wanting to volunteer supporting aging parents and seniors in the community, check out our growing list of organizations providing resources and services. Many of the organizations listed offer services for free and rely on a network of skilled and capable volunteers to provide services. There are resources for meal delivery, transportation, companionship, respite care, and more.
A Little Help
Values the opportunity for elders to remain an integral part of the community, to live in the homes they have come to love, and to maintain the network of friends and neighbors they have developed over the years. The willingness of neighbors to volunteer their time and expertise in support of the mission of the organization helps make this possible. Serving the Denver area.
Aging Advisory Council
Aids in planning and administration of Older Americans Act programs. They gather information to coordinate service delivery and address older adults’ strengths and needs in Boulder County. Members serve 3-year terms, with recruitment in January and July. Visit the Advisory Boards and Commissions page for details and to view current vacancies.
Boulder County AAA Respite & Companion Volunteer Program
Be a friend to an older adult! Respite & Companion Volunteers are paired with an older adult whom they visit for two hours once a week. The older adults who receive a visitor are experiencing social isolation and/or compromised health. Visits focus on companionship and activities; volunteers do not provide hands-on care. If the older adult lives with a caregiver, the visits allow the caregiver to take a break.
Circle of Care
An arts and aging nonprofit fights isolation for older, vulnerable adults using arts, culture, lifelong learning, and intergenerational belonging. Seeking volunteers as performance companions to help seniors attend concerts/events, build social connections, and provide door-to-door rides. Circle of Care volunteers receive free tickets.
Boulder County AARP Tax Aide
Volunteers are needed to help low- to moderate-income taxpayers prepare their federal and State of Colorado tax returns with an emphasis on helping those over age 50. Extensive training is provided, and the program leads to IRS certification for tax preparation. Volunteers are also needed to help organize and support the tax preparers and to schedule appointments and greet clients.
Colorado Center for Aging
Colorado Center on Aging recognizes the value of diverse perspectives and experiences and fosters a work environment reflective of the community at large. Volunteers are critical to achieving CCA’s mission of educating people to become engaged citizens. Training is provided by CCA members and volunteers.
Colorado Palliative & Hospice Care
An organization that offers respite care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Volunteers can provide companionship, emotional support, and assistance with daily living activities.
Handyman: Safety of Seniors
The Safety of Seniors Handyman Program improves life quality for limited-income seniors (60+) in 6 counties, helping them live safely and independently in their homes. Skilled volunteer handymen/women provide safety assessments, fall/fire prevention education, in-home repairs, and safety modifications. Labor cost is always free.
Harvest of Hope Food Pantry
This nonprofit provides healthy, supplemental food to people in need of food assistance within a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment. It’s most-needed food items are cans of black beans, red beans, chicken, shelf-stable alternative milks, dry pastas and travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, toothpaste, sunscreen and razors. Jewish Family Services
Long-Term Care Ombudsman
Advocate for residents of assisted living and nursing homes. Under the direction of a supervisor, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Volunteers work with residents and staff of long-term care facilities, assisting with receiving, investigating, and resolving complaints in these facilities, as well as advocating for the rights of the residents. Volunteers also provide information about the ombudsman program to residents, staff, family members and the community-at-large.
Meals on Wheels of Boulder
Meals on Wheels of Longmont
We are a volunteer-centric organization. Volunteers help in the kitchen, delivery meals, serve on the board, help with special projects and help during events. We are able to serve older people and people with disabilities because of community and volunteer support!
Mile High United Way’s Volunteer Connection
Part of the United Way movement founded in 1887 in Denver, Mile High United Way connects people and strengthens communities through volunteer engagement.
Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center
Respite & Companion Volunteer Program
Sister Carmen Community Center
This center needs volunteers for its food bank, thrift store, garden and front desk. Opportunities include weekly shifts in the food bank and drop-in shifts in the thrift store and garden, after training and scheduled shifts at the front desk.
TRU Community Care
Provides end-of-life care, grief support, and respite care for families caring for loved ones with serious illness. They offer a respite care volunteer program that provides relief for caregivers by staying with patients in their homes.
TRU Thrift Shop
Earnings aid end-of-life care, grief support & education. Nonprofit thrift shop needs volunteers (18+, or with adult) to sort donations in various departments. Donations are checked for quality, pricing & display. Typical shifts are 4 hours.
Volunteers of America Colorado
Offers a variety of services for seniors and individuals with disabilities, including respite care. They have a volunteer program that matches volunteers with individuals in need of respite care and other support services.
Wellness Coach
Join as a Wellness Coach to help seniors achieve wellness goals through evidence-based health classes. Workshops address chronic conditions, diabetes prevention, and falls prevention. Opportunities in Spanish/English, virtual/in-person, with flexible hours and training.
Via Mobility Services
Via Mobility Services offers transportation and mobility services for individuals with disabilities and older adults in the Boulder area. They have a respite care volunteer program that matches volunteers with individuals in need of companionship and support.
Colorado Visiting Nurse Association
Become a Colorado VNA Volunteer. Sometimes being ill can be a pretty lonely experience – but you can make a difference! This is why volunteers with the Colorado Visiting Nurse Association can help ease the daily loneliness and enrich the lives of those we serve.
