Living Communities

Long-Term Care

Are pets typically allowed at senior living communities?

There are many senior living communities that allow pets. In fact, according to a survey by the American Pet Products Association, 70% of assisted living communities and 90% of independent living communities allow pets.

If your loved one is considering moving to a senior living community, ask about their pet policy. You should also visit the community and talk to residents about their experiences with having pets. It’s important to choose a pet-friendly community that has rules and regulations in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. Some common pet policies include:

  • Type of pets allowed: Some communities may only allow certain types of pets, such as cats or dogs.
  • Size and weight restrictions: There may be restrictions on the size and weight of pets allowed.
  • Vaccination requirements: All pets must be up-to-date on their vaccinations.
  • Spay/neuter requirements: Most communities require that pets be spayed or neutered.
  • Pet liability insurance: Some communities may require residents to carry pet liability insurance.
